The Giant Schnauzer, also known as the Riesenachnauzer, is the largest of the schnauzers. The breed is believed to be the product of crossing the Bouvier des Flandres with the Great Dane, by Swiss breeders. The giant schnauzer can reach and exceed 27 inches. The breeds large size makes it somewhat unsuitable as a house dog. The giant schnauzer has a hot blooded nature that can be controlled by good training. As a guard dog he has no equal. Giant Schnauzers have a distinguished history as police dogs, as well as service in the armed forces. One source notes that during World Ware II, so many Giant Schnauzers died at the side of German solders, that the breed almost became extinct. The breed is able to endure harsh weather, has above average intelligence, is brave in combat, and is extremely loyal to his owner. In addition to their height, Giant Schnauzers are extremely muscular. Typically the ears and tail are clipped. Their coat is hard and wiry and forms a beard, mustache and eyebrows. The color of the coat is generally black, but it is not unusual to find ones that are salt and pepper.
